FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about our file hosting services
Q: Can I change my mirror to download.my-domain.com instead of myname.swmirror.com? A: Absolutely! This takes a simple DNS change on your side and a simple change to the webserver on our side. Our competitors either don't offer this option or charge a monthly fee for it. We offer this to our customers, upon request, free of charge.
Q: What equipment is used to run SWMirror.com? A: SWMirror.com is backed by dedicated webservers, fed by high-speed fiberoptic, redundant ciruits supported by more than 100 tier-1 backbones! We use Quad P4 2.8Ghz servers with 2GB of RAM running Windows 2003 Server on a 100mbit fiber connection.
Q: How are prices so low? A: We have a special setup that allows us to save money by cutting out all the fluff that you get with most hosts. Since we only provide a small amount of space (just enough to host a few downloads) and don't provide page hosting, email accounts, complex dns resolution, ftp access, password accounts, etc, we can keep the prices very low! You get only what you need - high speed, high quality, direct link access to your files and superb site statistics. We do not allow content hosting. Only "setup" files for download are allowed (exe, msi, zip, rar, hqx, bin, etc). Images, movies, audio files and similar "content" is strictly prohibited..
Q: Why are prices so low? A: SWMirror.com comes from veteran shareware developer Mitchell Vincent, owner of K Software and shareware activist and enthusiast. He realized that the industry needs a low cost file hosting/mirroing service, as many shareware authors lose their free and paid webspace due to bandwidth overages. Mitchell has crafted a package that is powerful, yet affordable - even on a shareware budget. He even uses the service himself! Check out his SWMirror site at http://ksoftware.swmirror.com
Q: Must I make any long term commitments? A: No, SWMirror now offers standard monthly billing! There's no need for high startup costs anymore and you can cancel at any time.
Q: How do we get our files on to the server? A: SWMirror.com has developed a sophisticated Online Account Control Panel to manage your account settings and files. You have immediate, real-time access to upload, rename, delete, annotate, categorize and show/hide your files from any browser, anywhere, any time.
Q: What is LiveStats and how does it work? A: To put it simply, LiveStats is the best statistics reporting software available. It allows you to track users, file downloads, referrers, browsers and many other options - even see a list of people currently downloading files!
Q: Does SWMirror.com advertise or use a popup when people click on my files? A: No, as long as you link directly to your files on SWMirror.com. If, however, someone comes to (or you direct someone to) the root folder of your host without specifying a filename (for example, http://yourcompany.swmirror.com/), the visitor will be presented with an index page of your account showing all of the available files which is consistent with the look and feel of SWMirror.com and which may or may not contain advertising.
Q: How are overage charges assessed? A: Many of our competitors will simply charge you for the next highest account - even if you only use 1GB of bandwidth over your limit. This can get very expensive. At SWMirror, if your account goes over the bandwidth limit the charges are $1 per GB, up to, but not exceeding, the cost of the account that covers your bandwidth usage. For instance, if your 50 GB account had an overage of 5 GB, there will be only a $5 overage charge. However, if your account went over by 40 GB, there would only be a $20 overage charge - not a $40 charge - since the 100 GB account covers your overage at only a difference of $20. We consider this to be the most fair policy in the industry.
Q: Are there any restrictions on connections or bandwidth? A: To keep the servers responsive and fast and to keep bursts of traffic from illegitimate sources from bogging down the servers, there is a limit of 50 concurrent connections per account. While this may not sound like a lot of connections to a person without hosting experience, this is equal to 18,000 downloads per day of a 1mb file using constant bandwidth, with all downloaders being on a 56k modem connection (more downloads when broadband users are mixed in). This setting is sufficient for most accounts, and keeps bandwidth spikes of any one account from affecting other accounts. If you feel your account legitimately needs more concurrent connections, contact us to disucss arrangements.
